Hi birders,

At the risk of being accused of shameless self-promotion, Ruth and I are
giving a talk at the Birds Australia (Victoria) meeting this Thursday
evening on our 2010 Victorian Big Year. We had 12 months of incredible
birding, we birded the length and breadth of Victoria and shared our
experiences with loads of birders. If you're interested in coming along to
find out how we went during the year, you would be most welcome. Even if
you're not a mad lister like we are, we had so many adventures and got
ourselves into all sorts of trouble along the way, and hopefully there's
something in that to interest everybody.

Details of the location and the talk are below.

MARCH PUBLIC MEETING & AGM 2011

WHERE: Birds Australia National Office, 60 Leicester Street, Carlton

WHEN: Thursday, 10 March 2011 from 8.00 - 9.30pm

WEB: www.birdsaustralia.com.au <http://www.birdsaustralia.com.au/>

Our guest speakers this month are Paul Dodd & Ruth Woodrow of the Birds
Australia - Victoria committee

Presenting: 'An Accidental Twitch: The story of a bird-watching couple and
their quest to see more birds in Victoria in a year than anyone had
previously seen'

Paul and Ruth live in Melbourne and both are keen birdwatchers. It is a
condition of their marriage contract that if one sees a new bird it must be
shown to the other. Paul works in computing and Ruth is a Park Ranger with
Parks Victoria. This charismatic couple joined the Birds Australia committee
to play an active role in both the fun and serious aspects of birding.

On 1 January 2010, Paul Dodd and Ruth Woodrow woke up without even thinking
about bird watching or breaking records. By the end of that day they had
seen a Diamond Dove and Barbary Dove in Victoria. Without realizing it they
were set on a quest that would completely consume them for the remainder of
the year and provide great amusement to their friends and followers.

Throughout the year Paul and Ruth travelled the length and breadth of
Victoria looking for birds, along the way seeing some of the rarest
(Orange-bellied Parrot at Western Treatment Plant) and hardest (Black
Bittern at Gipsy Point) to find birds that this state has to offer.

They camped in the remotest locations in the state in temperatures over 45
degrees and also in temperatures below zero. They drove the Murrayville
Track looking for Bustards, crossed the Great Alpine Road in a snowstorm,
braved the notorious Border Track and got themselves bogged in Murray-Sunset
National Park on Christmas Day.

An Accidental Twitch is Paul and Ruth's story of chasing the Victorian bird
watching record of 345 species seen in one calendar year. From an uncertain
start, and through many trials and tribulations along the way, to a finale
that saw them cover the entire state in the last two weeks of the year -
this is a tale of the excitement of competitive birding. And they are still
married!

The BA Vic Conservation Committee Meeting will be held prior to the Meeting
at 6.30 pm in the Meeting Room at BA National Office. Come along and become
involved in helping to conserve the birds of Victoria and their habitats.

Come to vote in this year's committee

If you would like to join the Birds Australia Victoria Committee now is your
chance. We need you to come on board. Have a chat to the committee at the
meeting and find out about some of the new exciting projects we would like
to get up and running in 2011.

Free parking is directly outside, and the venue is a 3-minute walk to public
transport (Melway Ref: 2B 11D). Afterwards socialise and enjoy light
refreshments.
