On Wednesday I mentioned a thought-provoking article by Penny Olsen.

The reference is "Setting Conservation Priorities: A Time to Choose", Wingspan, 10, 4, (December 2000), 18-24.

It has a wonderful mix of passion for species conservation coupled with an outline of an objective approach to deciding whether to spend on saving particular species.

It was my first introduction to "ecological triage" and I reckon it is still very relevant.

This is despite the focus of debate shifting, for example with Peter Garrett giving priority to ecosystem, rather than species, protection (see Sean Dooley's "Is the Threatened Species Concept, the next Threatened Species?" (Wingspan, 19, 4, December 2009).
