Hey Steve,
You may want to purchase a copy of 'Birds of New Zealand - Locality Guide' by
Stuart Chambers. Usual cost is around $55. Another similar book is 'Where to
watch birds in New Zealand: more than 30 of the country's best birding
locations' by Kathy Ombler. Another areas for site information is New Zealand
Birding Sites at http://www.nzbirds.com/birding/birdwatching.html.
There are a couple of good guides, with perhaps the best being 'The Field Guide
to the Birds of New Zealand', by Barrie Heather and Hugh Robertson, mainly
because of the good words. For example it gives estimated numbers for species
such as albatross and terns i.e. breeding location with estimated numbers. The
plates are o.k. Also 'The Hand Guide to the Birds of New Zealand' by Hugh
Robertson and Heather Barrie, which has less words / information. There is also
an o.k 'Field Guide to New Zealand Seabirds' by Brian Parkinson.
Have a look at BirdingNZ.net at http://www.birdingnz.net. It's a bit like
Birding-aus and Australia's Birdlines combined, with the two most relevant
links being:
. http://www.birdingnz.net/forum/viewforum.php?f=3 for general birding
discussion, and;
. http://www.birdingnz.net/forum/viewforum.php?f=9 for bird sightings and
alerts.
Also check out NZ birding pals at http://www.birdingpal.org/newzealand.htm.
Hope this helps.
