Hi All,

Following on from Biggles' report that Parks has caught one of the Leanyer
crocs, here is an update regarding access to the ponds.

The ponds are presently closed to everyone with no new permits or permit
renewals until the croc issue is resolved.

Power & Water had previously advised that they were going to be installing a
new key system from February onwards and birders were asked to call P&W to
organise pick up of a new key, together with signing a new indemnity form.
The lock system will be changed as planned at the end of this month
(January), but there will be no new issue of keys for birders as was
originally planned until the crocodiles (now down to 2) are removed.

We were able to organise access to the ponds yesterday for the National
Summer Shorebird Count, but we had to sign in as P&W visitors, go through a
brief induction, have an escort present on site and have the vehicle
decontaminated after our visit. At the moment there is also a large amount
of work going on at the ponds.

While current keys will open the gate until the end of this month, please
note that the ponds are completely closed to everyone at the moment,
including NT Field Nat Club members who have access to a communal key.

Julie Fisher at P&W informed me to call in (8985 7175) every couple of
months to check the situation. Hopefully we will be allowed access again in
the near future, as yesterday the ponds were very productive including the
following: 4 Little Ringed Plovers, 6 Eastern Yellow Wagtails, 5 Wood
Sandpipers, 57 Marsh Sandpipers, 12 Common Greenshanks, 2 Great Knots (our
first record at the site), 7 Black-tailed Godwits and 5 Pacific Golden
Plovers.

Cheers, Pete Kyne
