Hi all,
Thanks to David for your question about our website. To clear things up for
everyone - currently all advertising on Bird-O goes back into the site to cover
running costs and development of features. Neither Simon or I have seen a cent
from the site to date and don't expect to any time soon. We are running Bird-O
because we love birds and birdwatching and see a great need for good quality,
easily accessible information for birdwatchers of all skill levels in Australia.
I see the ability for birders to put up great photos like Jen's with an
interesting story attached as being of broad interest to the birding community.
While we seek articles from specific authors or on specific topics from time
to time, often it is spontaneous events like this that capture people's
interest the most. Major kudos to Jen for not just publishing the photo but
also wanting to get the story behind it out there.
On another related note - I am surprised by the idea that commercial websites
online are considered a bad thing. Personally I do my banking and a good deal
of shopping online, and basically all the sites I visit on a daily basis have
advertising in some form. Even the structure behind birding-aus itself is run
by Yahoo, a massive international for-profit company akin to Google. I think if
you are avoiding free content on commercial sites you are doing yourself out of
some very interesting and informative experiences.
The articles and archives on Bird-O are free for people to read. While we
can't offer to pay people for articles or photos, we can provide a vehicle to
get your information out to over 6000 interested birders in Australia and
abroad. Anyone interested in getting something published can contact me
directly or go through the website.
Best wishes and good birding,
Chris Sanderson
