A request for list members, particularly those who are in Victoria.
As part of my monitoring of the three threatened egret species (Eastern
Great, Intermediate and Little) in Victoria I've been trying to keep tabs
on any breeding that is occurring. So far this has been in Barmah on the
Murray River (and possibly Gunbower Forest) in Victoria and NSW. There
are likely to be other egret colonies as well along the Murray.
I am interested to hear of any egret sightings, particularly of birds in
BREEDING plumage. The current wet conditions and lots of water to many
Victorian wetlands for the first time in years has created (I hope) ideal
conditions for egrets and night herons to breed.
Photographic evidence would be most welcome but all anecdotal information
is of help. A useful tip that may suggest a colony is to look for signs
of night herons in breeding plumage, especially if this is near the Murray
River.
cheers, Martin
