Hi folks,

Jack, myself and Peter Marsh had a month or so on Madagascar, Reunion Is and
Mauritius over November this year.
It was an amazing experience and Jack's daily blog and my photos are now in
Jack's latest report, called "Makufka"
on Wildairies at

Visiting both northern Malaysia and now Madagascar in the last few months has
reinforced my belief that it is crucial that the birding community worldwide
support the environmental movements in these developing countries by visiting,
appreciating their sensational wildlife, their wonderful guides and spending
tourist dollars to boost their economies in general. This way these communities
will see value in preserving what remains of their forests and wetlands etc.
Visitor numbers in Madagascar from developed countries are down by more than
50% since the GFC (and the odd government upheavel which almost goes unnoticed
and is usually of miminimal concern when you are actually there in the country).

Anyway, merry Christmas and have a terrific 2011. Jack and I look forward to
catching up with some of you in all parts of Australia and other parts of the
birding world in the new year.

PS Anyway who knows the legendary Mosa (pronounced Moosa) of Parc Mosa, Ifaty
Beach fame in the spiny desert area of SW Madagascar might work out what
Makufka means in Malagasy! (or read Jack's report)
