Hey Peter,
Sorry, Yes Tree Sparrow! Not House Sparrow....
I'll reply off line.
Cheers
Steve

Hi Steve,
saw your trip report posting for Mt Merapi Java on birding-aus today and
noticed you reported House Sparrow. This is a rare species in Indonesia, in
fact I'm not sure it is yet confirmed for the country at all, since claims
from West Papua (Biak) have been questioned. Do you mean Tree Sparrow?
Anyway, good that you are getting the chance to go birding there. I would be
interested in first hand reports of the extent of damage - for example how
has the village of Kaliurang fared? (the 1994 eruption made it to the edge
of town). Also interested in any birding reports from Indo. Do you know
about Birdline Indonesia:
Bas van Balen and I are working on a paper documenting the birds of Mt
Merapi during the period after the last major eruption of November 1994,
covering observations mostly in 1995 when I was at UGM (Universitas Gadjah
Mada) studying Bahasa Indonesia as part of my course at the ANU. We have
been working on it a couple of years and it should be appearing soon in the
journal Kukila.
Anyway, selamat cari burung di Bali!
Cheers,
Peter Lansley,
Melbourne.=
