Yesterday while doing relief programs in the exclusion zone on Mount Merapi in Central Java I did a quick bird count. Yes there were still birds 3km's from the summit despite the eruptions from 3-4 weeks ago and the continual raining of ash and rumblings we experienced. Swifts sp. - 100's Fork-tailed swift - dozens. House Sparrow - 4 bathing in the ash dust?? Javan Myna - 1 flock flew over Javan Kingfisher - 1 heard Spotted Dove - 1!! No Leafbirds cause there were no leaves!! Now for Bali!!
