Nice photos, Mark.
I was hoping someone could also look at the following link and let me know
if I am looking at a juvenile bird or not. http://bit.ly/9qclvc
You are right about the juvenal. There is also a juvenal in the middle
photo, at the top left.
Today I noticed a Grey-tailed Tattler that was noticeably different from
the
other Grey-tailed Tattlers.
The brown bird looks like that just because it hasn't yet replaced the
faded, worn feathers of the upperparts with the fresh, new feathers, which
look a lot greyer and neater. In your first photo, you can see that the less
brown bird also has an old, retained tertial, and it looks like the bits of
primaries you can see are also old (as expected). You can see how that other
bird has neat, new scapulars. The brown bird shows some scapulars which are
so worn you can see the shafts sticking out past the ends of the feathers.
Cheers, Chris.
