I have recently returned from a part birding/part holiday trip where I
travelled from Brisbane to Coffs Harbour and then across to Stanthorpe and back
to Brisbane - in total about 1800 kms - in that whole time I was amazed at the
almost total absence of herons, egrets, ibis and other waterbirds - there were
simply virtually none to be seen - as I would pass the usual dams and watered
areas where one would expect to see them, or Ibis in pastures there were none
to be seen. Ive no doubt that there has been a mass exodus of these birds from
the eastern seaboard as they have departed for the bounty of inland Australia
but I must admit I was amazed to see almost none on the trip. There is no doubt
that in Brisbane there are fewer around, and I have personally not seen a
single White-necked Heron in many many months. I imagine when these birds have
bred up we will begin to see more of them around.
regards,
David Taylor
