Below is a link to a trip report from April 2005, which may be of some help.

I put Christmas Island on my 'Australian Embassies' list ;-) Never
mind the list, Christmas Island is an _amazing_ destination. It's very
easy to bird (exceptionally easy for an island), the snorkeling is
fantastic, and the crabs are mind-blowing. (Diving is said to be
outstanding but we didn't go.) The forests look freshly raked and
there's this constant snick-snick-snick sound. Really singular. I'd
love to go back and recommend the destination to anyone that can make
it there.

Rent a car, drive around, take lots of pictures, have a great time.
The seabirds really are astonishingly good - easier to see than on
many other island around the world - certainly better than anywhere
I've seen in the Pacific (but I haven't been to Midway which is, by
all reports, breath-taking with tens of thousands of Albatross.. I
think it's now possible to visit Midway again.) If you're keen on
seabird colonies, the sanctuary on Rota is not that famous for some
reason but really excellent.

If you learn more about flights from KL, would you mind posting back
to the list? That would be really good news...
