Twice a year, the skies over Israel teem with migratory birds. Around 500
million make their way across this land that lies at the junction of Africa,
Asia and Europe. And therein lies a problem.
Thousands of collisions between birds and aircraft have caused 70 crashes, the
loss of nine aircraft and the death of three pilots in the last 30 years.
Ornithologist Yossi Leshem's doctoral research into bird migration has seen
collisions ("bird strike") reduced by 76%. His work involved tracking of
precise migration routes, performed in a motorised glider. Using various
strategies, aircraft are now given real-time information of heavy bird
migrations, in order to avoid them.
Leshem also instituted a nesting box program for barn owls and lesser kestrels
in Israeli, Jordanian and Palestinian agricultural fields. Pesticide use has
been dramatically reduced as a result of the raptors taking vermin from the
crops.
Yossi Leshem's ideas would be of interest to anyone who cares about birds,
aviation, agriculture and even Middle East peace! He is touring Australia this
month, talking about his ideas. This Sunday, he is giving a public talk at
Melbourne's Beth Weizman Community Centre at 7.30 pm (306 Hawthorn Road,
Caulfield South), with dates in Adelaide, Sydney and Perth to follow. Please
contact me for more details.
