Hi, please can anyone supply quick information about birding around
Birdsville without a vehicle? We will only have Monday afternoon and
Tuesday morning there.
James and I are in Quiplie, SWQld, and have made a spontaneous decision
to fly to Birdsville and back, staying overnight at the Birdsville Pub.
If anyone has any tips about birding places around the town or within
walking distance, we would love to hear from you.
Also, is it worth taking my scope and tripod? I will of course take my
camera and binos.
Also, are there any species we should look for? I mean species which we
can't see further east.
We have only just arrived in Quilpie, and haven't done any birding yet,
so nothing to report. EXCEPT........ the land is looking fantastic.
Wildflowers are starting to bloom here, whereas nothing had started down
around Cunnamulla and Charleville. Some of the bloodwoods are in
blossom, and so when the sun comes out we expect to see woodswallows.
But do be careful if you are heading out here. A lot of roads are
closed, and the verges of the roads with single strip bitumen are still
very soft after several days of rain. We are driving a moderately heavy
motorhome, and can't pull off the road to see birds as we usually have
in previous years.
We stayed in Charleville in a caravan park called Evening Star. It's
fairly new, 4 star, and is 8km out of town on a mulga property on the
Adavale road. It's infinitely preferable to the places in town because
of the birding. I really recommend it.
Hope someone has some Birdsville information for us. We have to get it
by mid-morning Monday.
Cheers, and thanks in advance
Jill
