Dear Friends, I have had a very disappointing visit to Alice Springs. During July, which has an average rainfall for July of 14mm, more than 100 mm of rain has fallen. It has turned unsealed roads into quagmires. For example, when we camped at Chambers Pillar, it poured with rain while we setting up the tent , and again as we prepared dinner. Overnight there were a number of very heavy showers. The road back was a nightmare for the first fifty kilometres. Thank heavens we had rented a four whell drive. I have spoken to several 4WD hire places, and they all said that trying the Gary Junction Road in these conditions would be madness.
