Hello birders.I have just completed a whistle-stop tour of NT in a
campervan. Some of the higjlights were:
1.RUFOUS OWL: Easily found in the rainforest section of Botanic Gardens in
Darwin. Perched low over a small pool the birds were awake and one seemed to
displaying to the other, i.e., wings outstretched and kept motionless for an
extended period while it stared at the other bird. It looked like a threat
posture but I am assuming this is a pair.
2. CHESTNUT RAIL: Great extended views at Buffalo Creek after a short wait.
One bird came into the open to bathe in a small pool.
3. RED GOSHAWK: Bitter Springs Caravan Park. Luckily came across a female
bird pre-occupied with a fresh kill, allowing extended views and pretty good
shots. While I was repositioning for a different angle a male bird appeared
from nowhere and landed on top of the female while she was eating! Well,
she was more interested in breakfast than any of that sort of thing and sent
him packing. By the time I got the camera in place again the male was
sitting beside her and flew away soon after.
Good to know all these 'tried and true' hotspots are still delivering the
