Hi,
I've just written an article on http://bird-o.com/, about the user of Twitter
for birding conservation, which may be of interest. It uses the example of
World Migratory Bird Day. Despite the use of Twitter by birders, I am not
convinced that Australian birders are using Twitter to the extent that they
could but that also, there is the need to understand the tool a bit before
embarking. It's amazingly useful but there are potential pitfalls...as always,
content providers have to be careful not to 'SPAM' peoples accounts (as they
will easily lose followers).
There has been plenty of discussion about not detracting from birding-aus and I
am sure some will believe that using Twitter does this. But remember,
Birding-aus is archived with pages on Google
(http://groups.google.com/group/birding-aus) which can potentially be tweeted
out, if they are of general interest. So whilst the members of birding-aus may
want to receive 50 messages a day, maybe one or two a week will be really
important and users may send these out to their followers on Twitter. However,
it would be a very great mistake to automate birding-aus onto Twitter as it
would create a deluge of articles.
It always comes down to knowing your media, how to use it and how not to use
it. There are a few insights in the post.
Regards,
Simon Mustoe.
