Good on you Sean!
Just in case anyone has any illusions on the extinction issue, Australia
just lost yet another mammal - the Christmas Island Pipistrelle - a bat
which was, until recently, Australia's smallest mammal species. This species
used to be abundant, but has long been known to be in severe decline with a
predicted population of zero in 2009. So in the middle of 2009 the Govt
finally gave the OK for a recovery team to visit Christmas Island and try to
get all the remaining bats into captivity. The recovery team only found one
bat, they couldn't catch it and it disappeared during their trip.
Australians have a woeful record of extinction. In the case of the
Pipistrelle, it's hard to avoid assuming the Federal Govt deliberately left
the issue as late as it could to avoid any continuing costs. It's pathetic.
Presumably the outcome would have been very different if New Zealand had
been in charge of Christmas Island.
Cheers, Chris Corben.
