g'Day all

I intend to run a one day pelagic birding trip from St Helens shortly after Easter, probably somewhere around either 7th or 8th, probably 8th of April. After consulting and looking at long term weather, I will be able to confirm the date within 48 hours.

Last week on a non birding trip, I travelled 5 Nm out to sea and then south towards Bicheno from here on a non birding trip and observed the largest numbers of albatross I have ever seen. Scattered in moderate density over broad areas rather than in concentrated rafts that are more normal at this time of year, there were literarily thousand of Albatross with many fluttering shearwater, Wilson and White-faced Storm Petrel among them. The composition of Albatross species were approx. Shy (60%), Yellow -nosed (20%), Buller's (10%), Black-browed (5 %), others not identified (5 %). As I was skippering the boat in moderately rough seas, I was unable to do much birding however the indications are looking great for pelagic birding here at present.

The waters off the continental shelf are a little warmer than average this year although its arrival was later than usual. Who knows what we might find at "the Hill", an off shore seamount approx 23 Nm that will be our destination

If any one is tentatively interested please let me know and I will book you in. Cost will be $150.00 each for the day.

Regards
