If you are travelling between WA & NSW, I suggest you spend a few days at
the Eyre Bird Observatory (below the coastalescarpment), near Cocklebiddy
(about 250 km west of the WA/SA border). You'll see a broad range of mallee
woodland birds, coastal dune species, seabirds and waders within walking
distance of the observatory. More arid-zone bird species will be seen on the
open tablelands above the coastal escarpment.
You will need to inform the observatory warden beforehand of your intended

Hi Mike,
If you are currently confused by waders, I would doubly recommend ending up
at the Broome Bird Observatory. Not only are there great birds like Yellow
Chat on their doorstep, but you can do a tour where they show you the waders
and teach you how to identify them. It really is the best place in the
whole country to learn.
