Melbourne's bird fauna west of circa Merri Creek is quite different from
that to the east of that mark - probably reflecting the underlying effects
of original source communities of birds in an area which used to be largely
grassland and grassy open-woodland (versus forests, woodlands, swamp scrub,
etc. in the middle - east), and ongoing habitat differences relating to
underlying geology, rainfall, etc.
Altona is well west of the notional east-west divide, so the absence of Pied
Currawongs as residents (at the moment) or frequent visitors is to be
expected - they'll probably get there though, as Altona has a number of
habitat similarities to the middle and eastern suburbs.
