G'day Alan
You may not realise it, but there is a degree of concern about
poachers / wildlife smugglers in this country. This tends to be
aroused when unknown people turn up asking questions about "rare birds".
Rather that floating a vague question about rare birds, it might be
useful for you to state which species you are interested in seeing. I
think you will always get a better response if you frame your RFI that
way.
Regards, Laurie.

A few things strike me as unusual about this request:
First, Mr Beszant wants to see "rare birds" rather than interesting
regional birds, or ones that he hasn't seen before. Firstly I would
like to photograph any bird, but as I do not live in Australia, and
thus do not have the time you do, I try and target rare or birds
that I have not seen before. If someone had e-mailed me from a club
then all this would have become apparent.
Secondly, he doesn't give a date when he is visiting I am in
Australia most of March with my wife who is not a birder and so I
try and make birding efficient for myself so that I can spend time
on her interests, hence the e-mails requests, as I like to spend
time with my wife each day. Thirdly, although he has been on outings
with the Gold Coast group, he hasn't actually asked about outings in
Victoria, but merely wants the local knowledge. We are only staying
one or a maximum of two nights at each town between Sydney and the
Great Ocean Road and so I would not have the time for a day field
trip.
Can anyone from the Gold Coast Bird Observers verify Mr Beszant
as a bird photographer rather than anyone with a more sinister
agenda? Sinister? Is this for real? I can't believe what I am reading.
I'd be cautious about offering information until we can check
this out - sorry to be suspicious, but it doesn't exactly ring true
for me.
To verify that I do go out with the Gold Coast Observers Club,
please e-mail Terry Robinson and Terry Dillion
(who does bird conservation work for the Gold Coast City Council.)
I must say that I was not expecting anything like this. Usually
birders are friendly and help one another.
I visited WA last August and September and many of the bird
groups were so helpful (including Anne at the Albany bird club and
Maris of the Perth club and Frank O'Conner as well. They helped me
ID birds from the photos that I took) You could e-mail them for
verification as well if you are still that nervous. The Gold Coast
and NSW people are very helpful and friendly also. Victoria???
I think you had better contact all those people that have
viewed your concerns and put this right.
Awaiting your reply. Are you big enough for an apology? (As you
can probably tell I am still upset by your comments)
Attached a several photos that I took in WA last year to prove
that I am a birder.
