Apple iPad

Dave,

I don't know if it is better than the iPod Touch, as I have not handled the device. How it is better than an iPod will be up to the individual to assess. It is apparently to be priced at around the same as an iPod touch, which peeves me, as I only bought an iPod 6 months ago and for my purposes the iPad is better, but that is how it goes with new technology. The iPad is heavier than an iPod, but at 0.68 Kg, it is around that of a field guide. The ability to read ebooks on the Pad gives it the potential to be able to carry around several field guides and other references, yo me makes it fairly useful, but that all depends on the publishers putting out the books in ebook format. Several of the major publishing houses have expressed a lot of interest it seems, particularly in the area of textbooks.

The iPad certainly does run iPhone/pod apps and I reckon we will see a flood of new apps aimed specifically at the iPad.

Probably the best thing for people who want to know more is to go to Apples web site http://www.apple.com.au and have a look.

I wish they had called it something other than iPad though, it is a bit confusing.

Cheers,

Carl Clifford

P.S. Anyone want to buy a secondhand 32Gb iPod Touch?

How is it better than the iPhone Carl? A friend has a birding app on that which looks great - obviously you get more screen on this thing but it would be bigger to lug around. WIll it run the iPhone apps?

Dear All,

I have just had a look at the new Apple iPad on Apple's web site. Very interesting device. Great potential for birders, it appears to be a natural for field guides and for recording sightings etc. A space well worth watching.

Cheers,

Carl Clifford
