Ruff, Lewin's Rail Goolwa, South Australia
For the past four days, a Ruff has been present in the swampy area
approx 300 to 400m past the bird hide on Barrage Road, Goolwa, South
Australia (first reported by Winston Syson with Enid Pasco and Peter
Gower on 1/1/2010). It was still there yesterday afternoon at 2pm. Also,
an adult and juvenile Lewin's Rail were present further along Barrage
Road -past the actual barrage- in the vegetation across from a small
island within the channel.

Sat 2 Jan Oriental Pratincole Fivebough Swamp Leeton, New South
Wales
First seen on Friday evening, 1st Jan in flight over the wetlands. Tried
to relocate the bird on that day but failed. On Saturday evening, 2nd
January I found the bird again with a scope roosting on a small muddy
bank. The bird was in non-breeding plumage and was remarkably
camouflaged against the mud it was sitting on. The bird fed around some
cow pats, picking at small insects it appeared. Other interesting birds
in the wetlands included 20+ Marsh Sandpipers, over 100 Sharp-tailed
Sandpipers, Baillon's, Spotless and Australian Spotted Crakes,

Eastern Yellow Wagtail Lake Mitchell (Quaids Dam), Queensland
non breeding adult. 3 observers had good views of bird perched ontop of
low tree before it flew onto the ground. Distinct outer white tail
feathers in flight. Lack of dark streaking on the under and upper parts
ruled out Australasian Pipit which also has white outer tail feathers.

Wed 30 Dec Scarlet Honeyeater Ruffy Store, gardens outside the
shop, Victoria
Ruffy is midway between Euroa and Yea in nth central Victoria. While
having breakfast outside the cafe I detected the distinctive call of
this species. The observation shows the extent of the irruption of
Scarlet Honeyeaters into Victoria this summer. Also recorded SHs further
north not far from Euroa. All sightings to be atlassed!
