Good afternoon fellow birders,
Having returned over the holidays to Melbourne from Thailand, where I have
been residing in Chiang Mai (birder's always welcome for a visit) for the
past five years, I find myself with a few days spare from the 5th-7th
January. Would love to get up to the NW and/or N central Victoria, realising
time of year, and looking for a few species. As I am not in touch with the
present flowering, nomadic movements and climatic conditions, can you please
advise on local conditions for searching, recent sightings and possible
locations/routes for a 2-3 day stint. Willing to do a big drive on the
afternoon/evening of the 5th if necessary to get to a key location.
Species of interest for Victoria: Mallefowl (on site), Black and Pied
Honeyeater (noting recent thread on Goschen for Black), Orange/Crimson Chat
(Lake Tyrell???), Speckled Warbler, Spotted Quail-Thrush, White-throated
Nightjar, Chestnut-rumped Heathwren (tried in Grampians by airfield on last
attempt without success), Lewin's Rail (was tracking some e-mails on this
species in Victoria a few months ago), Black-eared Cuckoo, Grey-crowned
Babbler, Sanderling (yes?!? - any at Black Rocks? - this location still
good?).
Thanks in advance for any tips ...
Happy 2010 birding
