Looks like the rockets dropped off an afterburner that's spiralled after
becoming dettached, causing the spiral effect in the sky which you see
disappate as the other object moves away from it.

Hi Carl,
Amazing pic. The site you linked has a bit below the picture saying that
they think they've worked out the cause. Apparently a Russian submarine
fired an ICBM "accidentally" (oops?) and the initial rocket booster phase
created this image. Must have been amazing to see.
