For those who don't know about it yet, there's a fantastic scientific
expedition to the Coral Sea running right now. Last year they discovered a new breeding colony of the New Caledonian subspecies of Fairy Tern, and this
year they are sending content in real time from the boat. Today is the
release of the first video of the trip, which can be found at

Actually, the Coral Sea expedition that found the breeding Fairy Terns was not last year but in 2006. See Mike Carter and Simon Mustoe (2007), 'Another Form of Fairy Tern Sterna nereis Breeding in Australian Territory, Australian Field Ornithology, 24: 167-179. Note that as the title implies and the paper details, at that time we could not confidently assign the birds to the New Caledonian subspecies, believing that it could be an entirely new taxon. If there is new information that enables a more positive identification, please elucidate.

I think it highly likely that they will find something of interest. My fear, since I'm not on this trip, is that it might be a Bristle-thighed Curlew. One was seen recently in New Caledonia!
