The first WTNT to be seen in Vic (That I know about) for this season
were seen on Cup Weekend at Genoa by Nick Day & Andrew Wegener .
Then on 22nd Nov Len Axen had 20-25 over his home in Marlo - thanks
Chris Healey.
Both these sightings are in East Gippsland & stimulated me to spend
the weekend out that way. On Friday I found nothing between Orbost &
Bombala (NSW) or back down to Cann River on the Monaro Hwy, But they
were feeding above the Large Vehicle Turnaround 400 metres N of the
free camp (1 pit toilet only) at Thurra River Rest Area, which is 12
km E of Cann River on the Princes Hwy.
My wife and I found this a great spot for needletails in Jan & Feb of
this year. Also saw & heard Channel-billed Cuckoos here. Ron Becker
has been hearing these cuckoos for the last five years at Maramingo
(7km E of Genoa). He has lived there all his life and used to send
in Swift Reports to BOC in the 1950's & 60's. Now he has few swifts
but Cuckoo's instead.
I also did not find WTNT at Genoa, Maramingo, Pt Hicks, Marlo or any
parts in between. Then again these are early days for the current
season.
Thank you to those further North who have been posting or sending
privately your WTNT & FTS sightings. They are much appreciated.
Still very few FTS sightings this season!
Cheers & Happy swift watching.
