AusBirders, My method for cleaning lenses is to saturate a soft tissue with demineralized water (don't use rainwater as it will leave a residue) and thoroughly wet and wipe (lightly) the lens using a clean region of the tissue after each wipe. Then dry using a lens cloth, again not applying too much pressure. This particularly works well when there is a salt film on the lens. I would not recommend compressed air.
