Andrew
You ask "Has anyone made similar observations of red-necked rail behaviour?"
We stayed at Mission Beach, a few weeks ago (mid October) and I was in the
process of checking out from our "resort" when my wife called me outside. I
grabbed my camera off the counter, ran outside and managed one shot of this
bird before it ran under the hotel. Definitely a Red-necked Crake (see
photo)

You have chosen not to reveal the identity of the resort but I assume it is
the same one. The crakes are around the resort although this was the first
time in 3 days we saw one. However management said they were often in and
out during the day. The other highlight at the resort were the Noisy Pittas,
which we saw and heard frequently, right outside our cabin and which
apparently bathed in the small pond outside reception.
A great resort if you don't mind the gruelling 600m climb through the
rainforest from the car park to reception and tripping over the blessed
Noisy Pittas!
