At Manganan campground near One Arm Point on Dampier peninsula, sitting and
having a cup of tea and 18 gouldian finches fed around us for over an hour
until we went off to scour the mangroves. There were 4 black faced and
three red faced birds and the rest were juveniles. They were feeding on
loose soil in woodland that had been previously burnt. Unfortunately a lot
of burning goes on, on dampier peninsula, seemingly at the wrong time of the
year, like over the last few months and still continuing. I don't know what
effect it has had on the gouldians, but I suspect not a good effect. Frank
and Maureen who run the campground indicate that the birds have been there
for a long time( in speaking to Adrian Boyle he indicated that there was a
resident population on the peninsula). Frank indicated that Gouldians
nested in someones campervan once and they stayed until the babies fledged!
