Hi all,
Just for the record I should point out that the Barbary Doves seen in
the SW suburbs of Adelaide have all been reported to the relevant
authorities, namely the DEH and the Natural Resources Management group
for the Adelaide Mt Lofty Ranges some time ago. They have a person who
is responsible for the eradication of feral species and that is
apparently in place and I will personally follow that arrangement up.
However the main concern is that all three of these populations have
been discovered in the past couple of months on my routine bike ride
which I have been doing for the past 6 years. That three distinct
populations should turn up within such a short time is a worry and
suggests that there are other populations nearby that these have emerged
from. Problem is most backyard birdwatchers are not aware of these birds
and probably mistake them for Spotted Doves. Maybe public awareness
needs to be raised and the problem sorted now before we regret it later.
If only somebody had been proactive about Indian Mynas when they first
arrived.
Cheers
David Kowalick
