If you want to see a Southern Cassowary in the Wet Tropics, pop out to Etty Bay (just out of Innisfail). There is a healthy patch of coastal rainforest along the Moresby Range. I saw seven cassowaries in half an hour on Friday - a single adult wandering beside the road in, a father and year-old offspring fossicking among the tents at the caravan park, and a father and three stripies meandering along the access road on the way out. [Drive slowly along the access road when you hit the rainforest to make sure you don't hit a cassowary]. It is a lovely spot and would be a great place to stay [outside of the school holiday periods].

Regards, Laurie.
