I was actually talking in terms of 'modern' history. I own and have studied
Wheelwright's book.
In more detail, the Victorian Atlas (1987) states that the range and numbers
of Brolgas in Victoria have decreased considerably since European
colonisation (e.g. formerly occurred on the Gippsland Plains east of
Melbourne). It attributes 'draining and grazing of wetlands and other human
activities' to these reductions.
