Hi Mike,
There are regular birds in the Lake Connewarre system on the Bellarine
Peninsula. Most notably at Reedy Lake and Hospital Swamp.
"As the bird flies" the area would only be about 80km from Melbourne, and
maybe 65km from Seaford.
Very interesting for brolgas to breach that "western plains" boundary!

[Birding-Aus] Brolgas in a SE Melbourne suburb
Yesterday, 24 September, I saw two, possibly a 'pair', of Brolgas at the
Boundary Road & Boggy Creek Wetlands which are on Melbourne Water's
Eastern
Treatment Plant land near Seaford. They flew in from the east. They had
departed within an hour. This is the first record for the area which I
have
been surveying since 1964. The closest known pair is at the Western
Treatment Plant on the western side of Port Phillip Bay. They colonised
that
site about 10 years ago and until then weren't known within 100 km of
Melbourne.
