Hi all

At about 09.30 am (WST) on 24th August 2009, returning to Kununurra WA after visiting Spirit Hill and Marralum in the northern Keep River area NT, we observed 20+ Forest Kingfishers perched on power lines adjacent to the northern bitumen section of Webber Plains Road within the Ord River irrigation area. As we drove south towards Kununurra, the birds were spread out over about 10 km from the commencement of bitumen south to the sugar mill area about 12 km north east of Kununurra. They were perched singly and in loose groups of up to 3 (approx. 5 km. either side of 15 38'19"S, 128 45' 02"E).

Perhaps Forest Kingfisher may becoming established in the area because from 1993 to 1999 we lived at Wyndham WA and although I heard of sightings around the Kununurra irrigation area where we birded frequently and although it was on our watch list, we never sighted any during this time.
