Hi John
It has been mentioned on Birding-Aus before (and additional comments on
this are found
in the archives), but a program called BirdInfo can, I believe, do what
you seek. Surveys of any sort can be entered, and repeat visits
to sites readily dealt with. The program uses the Christidis &
Boles (2008)
taxonomy for Australia but offers a
few options for taxonomy (including not using Christidis & Boles if
one doesn't want to). The database
also includes a list of world
birds but that has not been kept current: it presently uses Clements
(2000) checklist and the Sibley & Monroe listing. However, the
program allows users to have their "own taxonomy", so if someone was so
inclined it would be possible to keep a world list up to date as one's
own taxonomy.
In the "Surveys" section of the
program, species are entered in a
specific way using either English or scientific names, or Australian
or world codes. Data are listed in the "Surveys" data entry page under
English names,
but reports and analysis of the survey data can be done in a couple of
ways and presenting scientific names. Reporting rates can also be
calculated.
Importantly, data from surveys can be easily exported in a format that
can be directly imported by the New Atlas of Australian Birds. As a
disclaimer, I have no interest in this program other than as a
satisfied user.
It has been developed by Simon Bennett; see his site http://ausbirdinfo.blogspot.com/
