Over the past 20 years having observed the minimal impact from
construction of several large Telstra projects at various localities
including the Kimberley, Arnhem Land and the arid zone, areas where
remote operating logistics are nearly always difficult, it is clear that
the big Telco follows an ethical, no expense spared, environmental code
of practice when operating in the bush.
Potential destruction to natural habitats during construction of the
proposed national broad band network across Australia is immense.
Installing the necessary infrastructure for a national fibre optic
network will require substantial clearance of natural vegetation in many
geographically sensitive areas.
The recent decision of the Federal Govt. to proceed with the
construction of the national broad band network using an unproved
inexperienced operator and this mornings announcement to break up
Telstra has left me wondering about unintended consequences and if
inexperienced contractors can be trusted to handle our natural assets
with at least the same professional operating conduct that Telstra
proved it is capable of.
