Hi all

I visited Warriewood Wetlands/Irrawong Reserve in northern Sydney
yesterday morning (Sun 13 Sept) for an early morning walk (approx
6-8:30am). Highlights in approx 45 species seen were:
- pair of Lewins Rail calling from deep cover by the elevated
boardwalk in Irrawong Reserve. This was particularly frustrating with
the closer bird, which was right under the boardwalk, as I could see
the vegetation moving but it was staying put, making a bizarre
collection of squeaks, grunts, wheezes and the like. The bird in the
swampy area called in a more conventional manner.
- Buff Banded Rails called from cover twice along the non-elevated
path in Warriewood Wetlands Reserve (the end away from Katoa Close)
- Olive Backed Orioles and Noisy Friarbirds calling strongly throughout
- a Brush Turkey chick in Irrawong Reserve
- Channel Billed Cuckoo heard calling in distance (my 1st this spring)
- Being approached to within 2 feet by an inquisitive (or aggressive?)
Grey Fantail that I pished out of cover
- Eastern Whipbirds very busy, vocal and visible

Apart from the CB Cuckoo and general activity, not many spring
migrants there yet ? perhaps a week too early.

Cheers
Tom Wilson
