I don't know how unusual that is, I've only ever seen two pairs.  I'm under the 
impression that the usual encounter involves surprising them by the roadside 
and seeing them fly off.

But in one of my sightings I was standing by the car when a female flew into 
the bushes nearby, pursued by a male.  They continued flying and pursuing 
around the place, at one stage landing 5m away before moving to a low branch 
and dislaying for a moment before departing.  Perhaps they're a little less 
wary during courtship, if that's what this was (it was early Autumn), and 
perhaps that's what yours were doing.
