Thanks for the warning Denise. It is a tragedy from a humanitarian view.
Unfortunately homelessness and violence seems to be increasing everywhere
and to all walks of life.

Dear all
Over the past couple of years there has been a large increase in the
numbers of homeless Aboriginal people in Darwin. The Larrakia night patrol
has picked up 1400 people in the last month alone. The level of violence
here is very high, and while most is committed against other Indigenous
people, non-Indigenous people can also be targeted,. Senior residents
who¹ve lived in the Territory all their lives, some of whom have worked for
many years with Aboriginal people, are telling me they are too scared to
even walk to a shop.

This may also go for Jabiru, being so close to Arnhem Land. Female
relatives staying with me the other night said people were leaving Oenpelli
for the outstations because of the violence there.

For years I¹ve been warning my birdwatching clients not to visit alone
areas of the city where there are few people, eg corners of the Botanic
Gardens, East Point or the beaches. I repeat that warning. To the
skeptics, and I¹m sure there will be some - my semi-traditional relatives
would not go to these places.

Leanyer and Palmerston Sewage Ponds are relatively safe as are birdwatching
spots outside of Darwin and Palmerston eg Palmerston mangroves and Howard
Springs.
