Last week I was checking out the birding between Carnarvon Gorge and
Roma. I dropped into the new tourist information centre at Injune and
asked for birding sites around town. They gave me some literature on a
property set up for birders at Arcadia Valley. It is on a road
parallel to the Carnarvon Highway I had just come down so I drove back
to check the place out. http://www.arcadiavalleyescape.com/where_is_it.htm
On the way I stopped and had lunch at Lonesome NP lookout where the
view is stunning. There is accommodation for those wishing it but
also very nice campsites where I put my tent. When I entered the place
I had a pair of Bustards walk across my path and there were lots of
Red-winged Parrots everywhere. At night in the moonlight I had a pair
of Owlet Nightjars chasing each other in a tree above. As you can see
from the website, the bird and mammal lists are made up by non birders
and it is easy to add new species. There was around 150 species on
the list of birds. There are two excellent bird hides overlooking
great spreads of water. I didn't see but the owner told me of Spotted
Bowerbirds around the homestead.
Is this the future of birdwatching for tour groups? National Parks
seem to be making taking a group into them so expensive yet an
individual can go in easily. I saw more species on this property in a
few hours than I did in Carnarvon NP in two and a half days. I took
lots of hots if anyone would like them.
