Regent Bowerbird

Hi Peter,

Back in the early 1970s I carried out bird banding studies at Tumbi Umbi and 
the Ridgeway.  It is, sadly, now mostly housing.  The late Bill Lane 
operated the banding station and there were frequent visits from the 
'Canberra mob' (Barry Baker, Mark Clayton etc.) who operated with Steve 
Wilson in the Brindabellas.
It was at Tumbi Umbi that I first met the Regent Bowerbirds.  They were in 
good numbers with a local reporting a large flock of males (40 or so I 
think).  Satin Bowerbirds and Green Catbirds were also banded there and it 
was also where I banded my first Lewin's Rail.  It was a juvenile and as the 
field guides didn't illustrate young rails its ID took a little working out.
According to HANZAB the southern limit of the Regent Bowerbird is Cattai, 
with occasional records further south to Bega.
