Peter,
Red-necked Crake are at the Centenary Lakes but very difficult at this time
of year (they are rarely easy). You'll find Black Butcherbirds there in good
numbers. Laughing gull is still around though I did not see it when I was in
Cairns counting waders on the Esplanade last Wednesday. Don't know about
Grey Goshawks around Cairns but we've been seeing them in a variety of
phases very frequently here on the Tablelands over the last few weeks. My
local male lost his second mate in 18 months to a car strike. this is
surprising as both females tended to keep to the forest where as the male
would sit on the wires out in the open and hunt beside the road.

Hello all,

I'll be heading up to Cairns next week where I'm hoping to catch up with a
few species I haven't seen yet, most notably Red-necked Crake. Are there any
good sites for them in Cairns and if so, how do I get there and how do I
find one? I would also be interested in seeing Black Butcherbird and Grey
Goshawk. I won't have a car so I'll be limited to walking, buses and/or
taxis. I'll also be going out to Michaelmas Cay on the 24th. has anyone been
out there recently and seen anything other than the usual birds there? Also,
is the Laughing Gull still around?

Cheers,

Petter Zahl Marki
