I wonder if playback is generally "kept to a bare minumum" and "almost secret, 
unspoken" at least partly because of the passion and emotion put into the use 
of playback.  I.e it might prevent it from becoming both popular and used to 
excess.  It does, however, mean that people who use playback must work it out 
for themselves, because there are no guides on how to use it.
