I agree. None of the purported explanations are plausible.
The theory I prefer expounded by those regularly counting waterfowl that breed in inland NSW and spend much of the rest of their time at the WTP at Werribee, Victoria, (such as 10,000 Pink-eared Ducks) is that the birds make periodic exploratory flights from there to their breeding grounds. If they find conditions suitable, they stay and breed. If not, they come straight back and make another foray later, i.e. a series of random searches. This was deduced from erratic short term changes in the number of birds present.
