One thunderstorm filleth not Lake Eyre, or any other large ephemeral  
lake. It takes a fair dump in the Channel Country in Qld to cause a  
fill event in Lake Eyre, and weeks or months before the water even  
reaches the lake. This makes the ability of Pelicans etc. to detect a  
fill even more mysterious.
I think Andrews suggestion would probably be the only way to discover  
the answer, and then it would not be guaranteed.

Having GPS trackers on a pile of pelican when Lake Eyre filled
would be fascinating.
