Dear Birders,
I was a volunteer at the Birds Australia Discovery Centre today. Walking into
the centre from the car park beside the wharf at the end of Jamieson Street,
Sydney Olympic Park, one passes an open grassed area known as the Parade Ground
on the left hand side. Walking past the ground this morning I noticed 4
White-fronted Chats. I went back after lunch, when the stream of visitors tot
he centre had tailed off and I could leave my co-volunteer on her own, and
found the Chats were still there. I did not have binoculars but the birds were
feeding in the grass quite close to the road. I was able to easily identify 6
males and 2 females.
I have previously seen these lovely birds in the salt marsh near the Newington
Armory but only when assisting with an Olympic Park Authority survey. This is
the first time I have seen the birds out in a publicly accessible area. From
the surveys that have been done it is possible that I was seeing the whole of
the Sydney population of White-fronted Chats on the parade ground today.
Another good reason for visiting the BA DC!
