On 15 April, a friend and I went birding at Jacana Wetlands, beneath and either
side of the 'Ring Road', on Moonee Ponds Ck near Glenroy (access from Glenroy,
off Pascoe Vale Rd). Conditions were not ideal with passing squalls and
constant wind. The area has a good variety of well and variably vegetated
(recreated) wetlands.
We recorded 45 species (incl. 5 feral) of birds in a circuit of the wetlands.
Highlights included a foraging group of Flame Robins including a very lovely
bright male. A hunting Peregrine or Hobby ducking and diving, but failing to
catch prey. Sadly light was poor and we could not get a view for definite ID. 2
Black-fronted Plovers foraging, and dashing about, on mud flats.
Also large numbers of hunting Welcome Swallows often flying right around us -
I think hoping we would flush moths etc for them to eat.
We had expected to see lots of ducks but there were not as many as we expected.
Got 6 sp including Hardhead and A. Shoveler. It was interesting seeing the
various cormorants sitting up on the reeds. I guess it was too windy to strand
on solid objects to dry their wings!?
As always lots of Little Grass Birds in the reed beds.
