Hi all
Wonder if anyone has any ideas re the following 'mystery call' I've been
hearing on and off for a few months now in Kurrajong Hills, foothills of
the Blue Mountains nw of Sydney.
The call is reminiscent of an old style home telephone ring - identical
double note in quick succession over a second, then with a break of
about 1.5 seconds before the 2 'rings' are repeated. Sometimes its a
single note not double, and is generally repeated a few times. The tone
and timing are very reminiscent of an older phone fitted with one of
those outside speakers so it can be heard away from the house, but its
significantly harsher - with a definite 'grating' quality reminiscent of
cockatoos (but is not the croaky Gang Gang call). It is loud and carries
well. Before anyone suggests the obvious - a home phone - the call
normally comes from a patch of creekside dry rainforest with turpentines
and grey gums away from any nearby houses, but as its private property I
cant get close enough from the road to see the source.
Im familiar with most of the local calls and Sydney region birds
generally but have no ideas on this one... Does anyone else?
Eric Finley
